Cryptogamic cover determines soil attributes and functioning in polar terrestrial ecosystems

چکیده

We still lack studies that provide evidence for direct links between the development of soil surface cryptogamic communities and attributes functioning. This is particularly true in areas free potentially confounding factors such as different types, land uses, or anthropogenic disturbances. Despite ecological importance polar ecosystems their sensitivity to climate change, we are far from understanding how soils function will respond change-driven alterations above- belowground features. used two complementary approaches (i.e. cover gradients forefront retreating glaciers well long-time deglaciated with well-developed types) evaluate role cryptogams driving multiple biotic abiotic functioning rates terrestrial ecosystems. Increases were consistently related increases organic matter accumulation, fertility, bacterial diversity, but also enhanced both sampling areas. However, show ability influence varies among covers, indicating differential thrive under climate-change scenarios largely determine fate coming decades.

Soil nematodes in terrestrial ecosystems.

There has been much work on plant-feeding nematodes, and less on other soil nematodes, their distribution, abundance, intrinsic properties, and interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. Seasonal variation in nematode fauna as a whole is correlated with factors such as moisture, temperature, and plant growth; at each site nematode distribution generally reflects root distribution. There is a...

Climate legacies drive global soil carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystems

Climatic conditions shift gradually over millennia, altering the rates at which carbon (C) is fixed from the atmosphere and stored in the soil. However, legacy impacts of past climates on current soil C stocks are poorly understood. We used data from more than 5000 terrestrial sites from three global and regional data sets to identify the relative importance of current and past (Last Glacial Ma...

Modeling Soil Depth from Topographic and Land Cover Attributes

[1] Soil depth is an important input parameter in hydrological and ecological modeling. Presently, the soil depth data available in national soil databases (STATSGO and SSURGO) from the Natural Resources Conservation Service are provided as averages within generalized land units (map units). Spatial uncertainty within these units limits their applicability for distributed modeling in complex te...
